Why do I have anal pain?

Anal pain can occur from many causes, and most are harmless. Your anal pain may occur if you have:

  • Hemorrhoids: swollen anal blood vessels
  • Anal fissure: tear in the anal tissue
  • Anal abscess: infection in the anal tissue
  • Anal fistula: tunneling through the anal tissue
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): chronic inflammation or ulcerations
  • Muscle spasms

Sometimes anal pain occurs from trauma, like straining from hard-to-pass bowel movements or anal penetration.

What other symptoms occur with anal pain?

Dr. Isaacson and her colleagues at Bayou City Surgical Specialists use your symptoms to help pinpoint the possible cause of your anal pain.

If your pain is mild to moderate or causes anal itching, you may have hemorrhoids. Anal pain that occurs during a bowel movement and lasts several minutes or hours after your bowel movement, may indicate an anal fissure or muscle spasms.

Fever and drainage with anal pain is a sign of an infection from an anal abscess or anal fistula.

When should I seek help for anal pain?

Some causes of anal pain may resolve on its own within a few days. However, you should see your primary care provider if your pain fails to improve within a week, is severe, or occurs with rectal bleeding.

Rectal bleeding is a common symptom of hemorrhoids but also occurs with more serious intestinal conditions like colon cancer.

If your pain is an ongoing problem that may benefit from surgery, your primary care doctor may recommend seeing the doctors at Bayou City Surgical Specialists.

What are the treatments for anal pain?

Treatment for anal pain depends on the cause. In some cases, making a few lifestyle changes may heal the underlying cause of your discomfort, resolving your pain. This may include not straining during a bowel movement, taking stool softeners, and adding more fiber and fluids to your diet.

However, some conditions may benefit from surgery. Bayou City Surgical Specialists performs procedures to treat many causes of anal pain, like a hemorrhoidectomy for hemorrhoids or a fistulotomy for anal fistulas.

The surgeons conduct a thorough evaluation before making recommendations and discuss procedures with you.

Anal pain may resolve on its own, but if it's persistent and disruptive to daily life, call Bayou City Surgical Specialists today or request an appointment online.
